After the baby fur seals at Safari&Marine

Wednesday, July 09, 2014

On June 7, 2013, the first baby fur seal in 25 years was born at Adventure World.
It has been about a year since the day that gave us staff great joy, and the baby, which weighed 4.4 kg when it was born, has now grown to 22 kg. His mother died of illness when he was two months old, so the staff took his place as his parents and raised him with artificial nursing, including feeding him milk. At around 4 months of age, the fish were placed in a pool where they were allowed to play while practicing eating. At that time, he only ate live horse mackerels, so we had to run out early in the morning to buy fresh live fish every day. By the time they were five months old, they began to eat fish from the staff's hands even if it was not live fish, and their weight began to increase steadily.
Finally, training began. We set up a platform in the exhibit area so that the fish could eat without having to climb down from it. Once they were able to do so, we taught them to follow the trainer. When we first took him out of the exhibition hall, he was so absorbed in what he was seeing for the first time that he did not come back no matter how many times we called him.
Through daily training, he is now able to appear in front of everyone for a short time after the show. The entire staff will continue to do our best so that we can continue to show you how well she is doing.
