To ensure the safety of the eggs, we took them from the parents, managed and incubated them in an incubator, and raised them by hand until the babies had grown to a certain weight. Later, we tried natural brood rearing with a young pair with a view to future breeding, but we were unable to confirm that the parents were feeding the eggs, so we are now watching over them again with artificial brood rearing. From now on, we will keep them in the same space as the parent birds.

What is early artificial brood rearing?
The staff members act as parent birds from immediately after the eggs hatch until the chicks are able to regulate their body temperature and receive feedings on their own.
The purpose of this method is to temporarily raise the chicks by becoming a "brooder" for a period of time. The goal is to return the chicks to their parents, if possible, once they have gained a certain level of strength and weight.

No kidding! Feeding as a penguin
During the initial artificial rearing, the staff members act as parent birds to raise the Red-Eyed chicks. Using the habit of birds to recognize the first moving thing they see when they are born as their parents, the staff members wear penguin-shaped hats and penguin-like beak-like gloves. The penguins are fed on food while listening to the sound of the parent penguins' calls recorded without uttering a single sound.

　The birth of a baby emperor penguin after a four-year absence was a moment we had really been waiting for. After the breeding season had ended, we were confronted once again with the Emperor penguins, and we felt that there were still many things we did not understand and many strange things that were happening. We went through many trials and errors to find out what kind of support was needed to welcome the new life, but the more we researched, the more we rediscovered their charms, and we were able to face them with a sense of enjoyment that exceeded the hardships.
　今回誕生した赤ちゃんは、孵化直後はこれまでの個体と比べてやや小柄で、のんびりとした雰囲気がありました。それでも、小さな体で“立ったまま眠る”といった、まるで大人のように落ち着いたしぐさを見せる個性的な一面もあります。人工育雛の期間中には、保育器のかごから飛び出してしまうほど元気いっぱいで、思わず私たちが驚く場面もありました。また、食事をねだる際に体を寄せてくる姿は、とても愛らしく、毎回心を和ませてくれています。今後は親子での同居にもチャレンジしていく予定です。可愛らしさの中にたくましさが増していく、今だけの成長過程を、ぜひ多くの方に見守っていただけたら嬉しく思います。
