To keep the egg super safe, we carefully took it from its parents and hatched it in an incubator. We then started with 'initial artificial rearing,' which means we raised the chick by hand until it grew to a certain weight. After that, we even tried natural rearing, entrusting it to a young penguin couple, hoping they'd become great parents for future breeding. But, we didn't see the parents feeding the chick, so now we're back to hand-raising it again. Soon, it will be in the same space as the adult penguins!

21 days old - Here's how we tried natural rearing (Photo taken October 21)

*What is initial artificial rearing?
It's when our staff act like surrogate parents right after an egg hatches, taking care of the chick until it can regulate its own body temperature and eat on its own.
It's a way for us to temporarily raise the chick. Once the chick gains enough strength and weight, the goal is to return it to its parents if possible.
This is a rearing method.

■ No, we're not kidding! We actually become penguins to feed them!
When we do initial artificial rearing, our staff actually dress up like parent penguins to raise the chicks! We use a cool trick: birds recognize the first moving thing they see after hatching as their parent. So, our staff wear special penguin-shaped hats and feeding bags that look just like a penguin's beak. We don't make any sounds ourselves, but we play recorded parent penguin calls while we feed them.

　The birth of a baby emperor penguin after a four-year absence was a moment we had really been waiting for. After the breeding season had ended, we were confronted once again with the Emperor penguins, and we felt that there were still many things we did not understand and many strange things that were happening. We went through many trials and errors to find out what kind of support was needed to welcome the new life, but the more we researched, the more we rediscovered their charms, and we were able to face them with a sense of enjoyment that exceeded the hardships.
　今回誕生した赤ちゃんは、孵化直後はこれまでの個体と比べてやや小柄で、のんびりとした雰囲気がありました。それでも、小さな体で“立ったまま眠る”といった、まるで大人のように落ち着いたしぐさを見せる個性的な一面もあります。人工育雛の期間中には、保育器のかごから飛び出してしまうほど元気いっぱいで、思わず私たちが驚く場面もありました。また、食事をねだる際に体を寄せてくる姿は、とても愛らしく、毎回心を和ませてくれています。今後は親子での同居にもチャレンジしていく予定です。可愛らしさの中にたくましさが増していく、今だけの成長過程を、ぜひ多くの方に見守っていただけたら嬉しく思います。
