Safari&Marine Mantohi Return to the Herd

Saturday, July 21, 2012

On a cold day in January 2012, when evening feeding time arrived, we could not find a single female Mantled Baboon. I searched the exercise area and found her lying behind a rock. She did not move even when we shook her body. We immediately took her to the veterinary hospital.
After arriving at the hospital, we examined her and found that she had been weakened by the cold and that her body temperature had dropped to a level that could not be measured with a thermometer. We administered injections and kept her warm with blankets and hot water bottles. At the beginning of his hospitalization, he did not have much appetite, but three days later, when we gave him tangerines, he started to eat them and gradually regained his energy.
In April, their strength had recovered, and we prepared to return them to their friends. Mantohi are very gregarious and may attack violently if they do not know each other. First, we took the female to meet the other mantle baboons while she was caged. As expected, the other mantle baboons threatened her. However, after about 30 minutes, a male from the original group approached. Apparently, the male had remembered the female! Furthermore, my one-year-old daughter also snuggled up to the female and began grooming her through the cage. The next day, the cage door was opened and the female immediately returned to the herd with the male.
Three and a half months after recovering from her near-death experience, we are happy to see her integrate into the herd. We will continue to watch over this family.
