Safari&MarineThe birth of two pandas, "Kaihin" and "Yanghama" -Ryohama's second birth and raising her cubs

Friday, December 10, 2010

On the morning of August 10, Yoshihama, who was about to give birth for the second time, wandered around restlessly and hardly ate any bamboo. When we put a large log in the room to distract her, she suddenly started chewing on the log with a crunching motion. Everyone watched in amazement, wondering what had happened. When wild giant pandas give birth, they build nests in tree holes or caves using wood chips and dead grass as nesting material. Perhaps Yoshihama tried to make a nest, or perhaps she wanted to relieve her frustration before giving birth, but the logs were torn up without a trace, and she looked refreshed.
At 10 p.m. that night, the contractions began. She became restless and began to wander around, pushing and wallowing and resting for hours on end.
At 6:39 a.m. on August 11, my water broke. However, even after my water broke, the baby did not come out. In the previous delivery, the baby was born 20 minutes after my water broke. 30 minutes, then an hour, and gradually more time passed. Our worries grew louder and louder, wondering what would happen if the baby was not born, or if the baby had died in the abdomen.
At 7:44 a.m., Yoshihama suddenly stood up, turned around, and curled up, and the next moment, she looked forward, and in her mouth was a healthy, pink baby. At last, a baby was born.

In the previous delivery, Yoshihama did not want to hold the baby right after she gave birth, but this time she turned around and held the baby firmly, as if to protect it from us. The baby was screaming "gah, gah" but became quiet and calm when Yoshihama licked and soothed her.
At 8:03 am, shortly after giving birth to the first baby, she turned her head to the side again with the baby in her arms and gave birth to the second baby. As she sat up, the baby was moving energetically at her feet. At this time, she was still holding the first baby and trying to suck in the second baby. When she gave birth for the first time, she was so busy taking care of the first baby that she did not even look at the second baby when it was born. This time, however, she was very aware of the fact that there were two babies. Compared to the last time, this is a big improvement.

On September 4, we began to open our doors to customers at 24 days of age. Many visitors came every day, and some days there were long lines of people waiting to see him. The panda's plush-like appearance is adorable, and when he yawns, customers cheer "Oh, wow!
We often hear customers say, "I thought pandas were whiter than this. I thought pandas would be whiter. The baby's fur, which was pure white at first, turned pinkish day by day. Why is this? In fact, the more the mother soothed and licked her baby, the more the color of the hairs became stained with the color of her bodily fluids. This color is a sign that Ryohama is doing a good job of raising her baby.
We also solicited names for this baby Futago, and received about 15,000 submissions from all over the country. After a strict screening process, we decided on "Kaihin" and "Yanghama," which are appropriate for Shirahama, the town of pandas.
On October 8, we held a naming ceremony at Panda Land.
On November 1, the weighing anniversary, the total length (from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail) was measured. When they were born, they were about 20・・, but Kaihin grew to 60.5 cm and Yanghama to 59.3 cm.
Four months after birth, they weighed more than 6 kg and were able to walk, albeit unsteadily.
We expect to see them playing together, climbing trees, and being active.
