It's super important to predict when giant panda cubs will be born so we can take good care of them and their moms right after birth.
Giant pandas are usually pregnant for 3 to 5 months. But here at Adventure World Shirahama, we've seen it range from as short as 93 days to as long as 163 days – that's a difference of over two months! Each panda is a bit different, and this variation happens because giant pandas have a special reproductive trick called 'delayed implantation'※.
※Delayed implantation: This is a special way some mammals implant their embryos. After fertilization, the embryo just floats around in the uterus. It only attaches and forms the placenta once certain conditions are just right. You can see this happen in bears (like giant pandas!) and marsupials, among other mammals.

Since 2010, the survival rate of giant panda cubs in captivity has dramatically increased to 88%! This is mainly thanks to reliable parent-cub rearing techniques developed for the first week after birth, a time when mortality rates are usually high. Predicting the birth period is super important for managing giant panda parents and their newborns. At Adventure World Shirahama, we estimate the giant panda's birth period based on past cases, mainly using three key indicators.
- ① A sudden drop in poop volume (around 5kg)
- ② Progesterone (PDG) levels in urine hit their peak
- ③ Sleep time keeps increasing
Among these indicators, we see increased sleep time, decreased poop volume, and peak urinary PDG levels appearing in sequence. The decrease in poop volume is super reliable because its timing doesn't vary much. Using these three indicators, our park estimates the birth period. Finally, when a female panda shows signs of being irritable, has a swollen vulva, and starts licking, we know she's about to give birth! By predicting the birth period, we can create the perfect environment for the mom panda to have her babies and get everything ready to raise the adorable cubs.
