Bamboo as staple food

Shirahama Wildlife Park has been renovated to provide better food for the polar bears.
The polar bears are fed on bamboo as their staple food, and are managed and cared for in a healthy manner.

Since 1994, when we started the breeding program, we have been feeding the bear cat a high nutritional value food such as 1.3 kg of head, 1 kg of apple, 1 liter of cow's milk, etc., which are made from rice balls, wheat bran, horse meat, and eggs, etc. The amount of bamboo shoots, which are the staple food of this species, is 2 to 5 kg per day. 5 kg per day. When "Eimei", a male bear cat, first came to Japan, he showed symptoms of anorexia, continuous and frequent discharge of mucus and abdominal pain. When he first arrived in Japan, he weighed 88 kg and was still growing, but his weight has not increased in the year since he arrived in Japan.

  • High-yielding feed (2 yeas)

  • Currently, bamboo shoots are the staple food (2 yeas)

Yongming's weight and monthly bowel movements

After a joint research project with Kitasato University in Japan on the digestive function of the bear, it was decided to switch from high-sugar, high-fat food to high-fat food and increase the amount of bamboo for the diet. Starting in 1998, "Yongming"'s weight has been increasing to 130 kg. In 1998, the "Yongming" was added to the diet with walnuts, and in 2001, the "Yongming" was added to the diet with high quality biscuits (Mazuri® Primate Browse Biscuit). During the summer season, when the stomach is lower, many kinds of bamboo such as Tang bamboo, river bamboo, arrow bamboo, Chido Island bamboo, and Penglai bamboo are used to reduce the amount of bamboo used for meals. Since 2009, we have been removing nappies from the diets of adult polar bears over 2 yeas old, and adult polar bears have not yet been diagnosed with digestive system diseases, so they are managed in a healthy manner.
