Learn about the history of Adventure World's panda family,
dating back to 1987.

  • July 1987

    A sister partnership with Jinan Zoo in Shandong Province, China was signed.

  • March 1988

    Animal exchanges with Jinan Zoo started.
    In the five years between 1988 and 1993,
    received18 animals of four species and
    sent out 13 animals of six species.

  • September

    Two pandas—Chenchen and Qingqing—arrived from Chengdu Zoo in Sichuan, China.
    The Sea and Land Panda Exhibit was held (three months).

  • January 1992

    Two golden snub-nosed monkeys arrived from Jinan Zoo.

  • September 1994

    The world's first long-term, joint international giant panda breeding research began with the Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens and the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (hereafter "the Chengdu base").
    Eimei (male) and Youhin (female) arrived in the park.

  • March 1995

    Construction of Panda Land (now the Breeding Center) was completed.

  • May 1996

    Our staff received training on artificial insemination at the Chengdu base (for one week).

  • July 1997

    Youhin passed away.

  • July 2000

    Meimei (female) arrived in Japan.

  • September

    Meimei gave birth to one offspring (female), the first panda cub born in Japan in 12 years. (Meimei was artificially inseminated before arriving in the park.)
    The cub was named Rauhin. The name was given by then Shirahama Mayor Seibe Manabe.

  • December 2001

    Meimei gave birth to one offspring (male).
    the world’s first case of birth in December.
    The cub was named Yuhin.
    The name was given by then Chair of the Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens Liu Shanghua.

  • May 2003

    Eimei and Meimei mated successfully.

  • September

    Meimei gave birth to two offspring (male), the first birth by natural mating in Japan.
    She also became the first mother that successfully reared twins in captivity.
    Meimei was awarded as an "Animal of Merit" by the JSPCA.

  • October

    The twin cubs were named Ryuhin (male) and Shuhin (male).
    The names were given by then Chair of the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums Takamasa Ikeda.

  • May 2004

    The Breeding Award was received from the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums for the breeding of giant pandas by natural mating.

  • June

    Yuhin left for the Chengdu base for future breeding.

  • August 2005

    Meimei gave birth to one offspring (male).
    This was the first delivery at the public birthing room. Guests can see the pandas rearing their cubs.

  • October

    The cub was named (via public selection) Kouhin (male).

  • August 2006

    Eimei and Meimei mated successfully.

  • December

    Meimei gave birth to two offspring (female and male).

  • February 2007

    The twin cubs were named (via public selection) Aihin (female) and Meihin (male).

  • October

    Ryuhin and Shuhin left for the Chengdu base for future breeding.

  • April 2008

    Eimei and Rauhin mated successfully.

  • September

    Rauhin gave birth to two offspring (female and male).
    This was the first time a panda born in Japan gave birth.

  • October

    Meimei passed away.

  • November

    The twin cubs were named (via public selection) Meihin (female) and Eihin (male).

  • June 2009

    Our staff left for the Chengdu base for (one-month) on-site training on medical treatment, behavioral training techniques, and health management for elderly specimens.

  • March 2010

    Kouhin left for the Chengdu base for future breeding.

  • March

    Eimei and Rauhin mated successfully.

  • August

    Rauhin gave birth to two offspring (female and male).

  • October

    The twin cubs were named (via public selection) Kaihin (male) and Youhin (female).

  • July 2011

    Eimei, Meimei, and Rauhin were knighted by Wakayama Prefecture for their distinguished service, gaining the title of "Wakayama de Knight."

  • March 2012

    Eimei and Rauhin mated successfully.

  • August

    Rauhin gave birth to one offspring (female).

  • October

    The cub was named (via public selection) Yuhin (female).

  • December

    Aihin and Meihin left for the Chengdu base for future breeding.

  • February 2013

    Meihin and Eihin left for the Chengdu base for future breeding.

  • April

    Construction of the endangered animal breeding center PANDA LOVE was completed.

  • July 2014

    Eimei and Rauhin mated successfully.

  • December

    Rauhin gave birth to two offspring (female).

  • February 2015

    The twin cubs were named (via public selection) Ouhin (female) and Touhin (male).

  • May 2016

    Eimei and Rauhin mated successfully.

  • September

    Rauhin gave birth to one offspring (female).

  • December

    The cub was named (via public selection) Kouhin (female).

  • April 2017

    The NHK Special "The Miracle Panda Family–A Family Tale of Love and Tears" was broadcast.

  • May

    The Koga Award was received from the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums for the promotion of the Japan-China joint research on giant panda breeding using the breeding loan system.

  • June

    Kaihin, Youhin and Yuhin left for the Chengdu base for future breeding.

  • February 2018

    Eimei received the Grand Prix, top prize in the 10th Japan Animal Awards.

  • April

    Eimei and Rauhin mated successfully.

  • May

    The giant panda breeding team received the Award for Distinguished Service, Local Revitalization Division, a commendation from the governor of Wakayama Prefecture.

  • August

    Rauhin gave birth to one offspring (female).

  • December

    The cub was named (via public selection) Saihin (female).

  • January 2019

    The Special Award from Kansai Genki Bunkaken was received.

  • March

    The Japan-China Joint Research on Giant Panda Breeding Symposium was held for the first time.

  • August

    A delegation of select officials from China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs planted cherry and peach trees as part of the Japan-China International Solidarity Project on Afforestation and Tree-planting.

  • October

    Our staff left for the Chengdu base for (three-month) training on the health management for elderly specimens and total care for panda cubs.

  • January 2020

    The NHK program Family History broadcast "Saihin the Panda: The Roots of the Panda Family in Shirahama, Wakayama."

  • June

    Eimei and Rauhin mated successfully.

  • November

    Rauhin gave birth to one offspring (female).

  • December

    Eimei and Rauhin were presented with a thank-you letter recognizing their distinguished service to the tourism industry in Shirahama Town.

  • March 2021

    The cub was named (via public selection) Fuhin (female).

  • January 2022

    Wakayama Prefecture and Sichuan Province in China signed an Agreement on the Establishment of Friendly Relations, connected by pandas.

  • December

    Eimei was appointed as a special envoy for friendship between China and Japan by the Consulate-General of China in Osaka.

  • February 2023

    Eimei, Ouhin, and Touhin left for the Chengdu base.

  • September 2024

    The Japan-China joint research on giant panda breeding celebrated its 30th anniversary.
    An agreement was signed with iPANDA (an online media platform of China Central Television).

  • January 2025

    Eimei passed away.
