Our Story

Let's take a look at the history of Adventure World's panda family, from 1987 until now!

  • July 1987

    We've formed a sister partnership with Jinan Zoo in Shandong Province.

  • March 1988

    Started animal exchanges with Jinan Zoo!
    Over 5 years, from 1988 to 1993:
    We welcomed: 4 species, 18 animals
    We sent: 6 species, 13 animals

  • 9月

    Two pandas, 'Chen Chen' and 'Qing Qing', arrived from Chengdu Zoo in Sichuan Province.
    We held the 'Sea and Land Panda Exhibition' for three months!

  • January 1992

    Two golden snub-nosed monkeys arrived from Jinan Zoo.

  • September 1994

    We teamed up with the Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens and the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding to launch the world's first 'Giant Panda Long-term International Giant Panda Conservation Joint Project'.
    Two pandas, 'Eimei' (male) and 'Yohin' (female), joined us!

  • March 1995

    Panda Land (now the Breeding Center) was completed.

  • May 1996

    Went to Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base
    for a one-week training to learn artificial insemination techniques.

  • July 1997

    Yonghama passed away.

  • July 2000

    Meimei (female) came to Japan!

  • 9月

    Meimei gave birth to a baby girl, the first panda cub born in Japan in 12 years!
    (She was artificially inseminated before coming to us.)
    The baby was named 'Rauhin'.
    Her name was chosen by Seibei Manabe, who was the Mayor of Shirahama Town at the time.

  • December 2001

    Meimei gave birth to a baby boy!
    It was the world's first birth in December.
    The baby was named 'Yuhin'.
    Named by: Mr. Liu Shanghua, who was the President of the China Zoo Association at the time.

  • May 2003

    Eimei and Meimei's breeding was a success!

  • 9月

    Meimei gave birth to twin boys!
    This was the first time pandas were born in Japan through natural mating.
    It was also the first time a mother successfully raised twins in captivity!
    Meimei received the 'Meritorious Animal' award from the Japan Animal Welfare Society.

  • 10月

    The names for the twin babies have been decided!
    They are "Rauhin" (male) and "Shuhin" (male).
    Named by: Takamasa Ikeda, who was the President of the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums at the time.

  • May 2004

    We received the 'Breeding Award' from the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums for successfully breeding giant pandas through natural mating.

  • 6月

    Yuhin left for Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base to help with future breeding.

  • August 2005

    Meimei gave birth to one cub (male)!
    This was the first birth in the public birthing room.

  • 10月

    The baby was named 'Kohin' (male) through a public naming contest.

  • August 2006

    Eimei and Meimei's breeding was a success!

  • 12月

    Meimei gave birth to two babies (a girl and a boy)!

  • February 2007

    The twin babies were named (through a public naming contest):
    'Aihin' (female) and 'Meihin' (male).

  • 10月

    'Ryuuhin' and 'Shuuhin' headed off to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding to help with future breeding efforts.

  • April 2008

    Eimei and Rauhin successfully mated!

  • 9月

    Rauhin gave birth to a boy and a girl!
    This was the first time a panda born in Japan gave birth here!

  • 10月

    Meimei passed away.

  • 11月

    The names for the twin cubs were chosen by public submission!
    They were named 'Meihin' (female) and 'Eihin' (male).

  • June 2009

    We sent staff to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding for a one-month training program to learn about treatment, training techniques, and health management for elderly pandas.

  • March 2010

    Kohin left for Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base to help with future breeding.

  • 3月

    Eimei and Rauhin successfully mated!

  • 8月

    Rauhin gave birth to two cubs (a male and a female)!

  • 10月

    The twin babies were named (through a public naming contest):
    'Kaihin' (male) and 'Yohin' (female).

  • July 2011

    Eimei, Meimei, and Rauhin were honored with the title of 'Wakayama de Knight' by Wakayama Prefecture!

  • March 2012

    Eimei and Rauhin successfully mated!

  • 8月

    Rauhin gave birth to a baby girl!

  • 10月

    The baby was named (through a public naming contest):
    'Yuhin' (female).

  • 12月

    Aihin and Meihin left for Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base to help with future breeding.

  • February 2013

    Meihin and Eihin left for Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base to help with future breeding.

  • 4月

    The 'PANDA LOVE' Rare Animal Breeding Center was completed.

  • July 2014

    Eimei and Rauhin successfully mated!

  • 12月

    Rauhin gave birth to twin girls!

  • February 2015

    The names for the twin cubs were chosen by public submission!
    They were named 'Ouhin' (female) and 'Touhin' (female).

  • May 2016

    Eimei and Rauhin successfully mated!

  • 9月

    Rauhin gave birth to a baby girl!

  • 12月

    The baby's name has been decided (through public submission)!
    It's "Yuihin" (female).

  • April 2017

    NHK Special 'Miracle Panda Family: 1000 Days Up Close' was broadcast.

  • 5月

    We received the 'Koga Award' from the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums for our work on the Giant Panda Conservation Joint Project, which uses the breeding loan system.

  • 6月

    Kaihin, Yohin, and Yuhin left for Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base to help with future breeding.

  • February 2018

    Eimei won the 'Grand Prix' at the 10th Japan Animal Awards!

  • 4月

    Eimei and Rauhin successfully mated!

  • 5月

    Our giant panda breeding team received the Wakayama Prefecture Governor's Commendation!
    They were awarded the 'Regional Revitalization Department Achievement Award'.

  • 8月

    Rauhin gave birth to a baby girl!

  • 12月

    The baby's name was chosen by public submission!
    She was named 'Saihin' (female).

  • January 2019

    We received the Kansai Genki Culture Award's "Special Prize"!

  • 3月

    We held the first-ever Giant Panda Conservation Joint Project Symposium!

  • 8月

    The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mid-level Cadre Delegation participated in the 'Japan-China Afforestation and Tree Planting International Solidarity Project'.
    They planted 'Sakura' (cherry blossom) and 'Hanamomo' (flowering peach) trees.

  • 10月

    We sent staff to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in China
    for a three-month training program to learn about health management for elderly pandas
    and total care for panda cubs.

  • January 2020

    NHK Family History 'Panda Saihin ~The Roots of the Shirahama Panda Family in Wakayama~' was broadcast.

  • 6月

    Eimei and Rauhin successfully mated!

  • 11月

    Rauhin gave birth to a baby girl!

  • 12月

    Shirahama Town recognized our contributions to the tourism industry,
    and presented 'Eimei' and 'Rauhin' with letters of appreciation!

  • March 2021

    The baby's name was chosen by public submission!
    She was named 'Fuuhin' (female).

  • January 2022

    Wakayama Prefecture and China's Sichuan Province formed a friendship city agreement, all thanks to pandas!

  • 12月

    Eimei was appointed as a 'Japan-China Friendship Envoy' by the Chinese Consulate General in Osaka.

  • February 2023

    Eimei, Ouhin, and Tohin left for Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base.

  • September 2024

    The Giant Panda Conservation Joint Project is celebrating its 30th anniversary!
    We've signed an agreement with iPANDA (CCTV's online media platform).

  • January 2025

    Eimei passed away.

  • June 2025

    Rauhin, Yuihin, Saihin, and Fuhin are off to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding!
