Two golden snub-nosed monkeys from Jinan Zoo came to live at our park.

Launched the world's first "Giant Panda Long-term International Cooperative Breeding Research" project with the Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens and the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.
Two giant pandas, "Eimei" (male) and "Youhin" (female), came to live at our park.

Panda Land (now the Breeding Center) was completed.

Sent staff to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding
to learn artificial insemination techniques (for 1 week).

Youhin passed away.

Meimei (female) arrived in Japan.

Meimei gave birth to a cub (female), the first giant panda baby born in Japan in 12 years!
(She had been artificially inseminated before coming to the park.)
The cub was named "Rauhin."
Named by: Seibei Manabe, then Mayor of Shirahama Town.

Mei Mei gave birth to a male cub!
It was the first time in the world for a panda to be born in December.
The cub was named "Kohin".
Named by: Liu Shanghua, then President of the Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens.

Eimei and Mei Mei successfully mated.

Mei Mei gave birth to twin male cubs, marking the first successful natural mating and breeding of giant pandas in Japan!
It was also the first time a mother successfully raised twins in captivity.
Mei Mei received the "Distinguished Animal" award from the Japan Animal Welfare Society.

The twin cubs were named "Ryuhi" (male) and "Shuhi" (male).
Named by: Takamasa Ikeda, then President of the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

We received the "Breeding Award" from the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums for our work in giant panda natural mating and breeding.

For future breeding, Kohin headed off to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.

Mei Mei gave birth to a male cub!
This was the first time a birth happened in a public birthing room, and we even showed the cub-rearing process to everyone.

The cub was named "Kouhin" (male) through a public naming contest.

Eimei and Mei Mei successfully mated.

Mei Mei gave birth to twin cubs (female, male).

The twin cubs were named "Aihin" (female) and "Meihin" (male) through a public naming contest.

For further breeding in the future, Ryuhi and Shuhi headed off to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.

Eimei and Rauhin successfully mated.

Rauhin gave birth to twin cubs (female, male)!
This was a big deal because it was the first time a panda born in Japan successfully gave birth here.

Mei Mei passed away.

The twin cubs were named "Meihin" (female) and "Eihin" (male) through a public naming contest.

We sent staff to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding to learn about treatment, training techniques, and health management for elderly pandas (for 1 month).

For future breeding, Kouhin headed off to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.

Eimei and Rauhin successfully mated.

Ryohin gave birth to two cubs (one male, one female).

The twin cubs were named (via public submission) 'Kaihin' (male) and 'Yohin' (female).

Three giant pandas, Eimei, Meimei, and Ryohin, were awarded the Wakayama Prefecture Order of Merit, "Wakayama Knight" title.

Received the 'Koga Award' from the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums (Public Interest Incorporated Association) for its panda conservation cooperation project utilizing the giant panda breeding loan system.

'Kaihin', 'Yohin', and 'Yuhin' moved to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding for future breeding efforts.

'Eimei' received the 'Grand Prize' at the 10th Japan Animal Awards.

Eimei and Rauhin successfully mated.

The giant panda breeding team received the 'Regional Revitalization Department Achievement Award' from the Governor of Wakayama Prefecture.

First Japan-China Giant Panda Conservation Cooperation Project Seminar held

A delegation from China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs planted "cherry blossoms" and "peach blossoms" as part of the "Japan-China Afforestation International Joint Project".

Sent staff to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in China
for a 3-month training program focused on learning about health management for elderly giant pandas and
comprehensive care for panda cubs.

NHK's "Family History" special program, "Giant Panda Saihin ~The Roots of the Wakayama Shirahama Giant Panda Family~" aired.

Eimei and Rauhin successfully mated.

Ryohin gave birth to one cub (female).

Shirahama Town recognized "Eimei" and "Rauhin" for their contributions to the local tourism industry and presented them with letters of appreciation.
