(Located in Shirahama-cho, Wakayama Prefecture, on the warm Kii Peninsula, the park is home to approximately 1,600 animals of 120 species from land, sea, and air, and is a member of the Japan Zoo and Aquarium Association and the Japan Museum Association. Through people, animals, and nature, the park hopes to create opportunities for each and every visitor to become more positive and to have a positive impact on the future of life. We also aim to contribute to the realization of a bright and prosperous society filled with smiling faces, and to make the Park a place that will always be needed. In 1994, as the Japanese branch of the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding and Research Base in China, we started Japan-China joint research for giant panda breeding under the "Breeding Loan System" for the first time in the world. In July 2000, the "Happiness Project" was launched, and since then a total of 17 giant pandas have been successfully bred. We have made efforts to preserve and breed the species and to create scenes of encounters between you and the animals. We are promoting the "Happiness Project" in the hope that many small "happy" moments that we tend to forget in our daily lives will accumulate to form a large circle of kindness and spread. This project aims to protect the satoyama environment by cutting down bamboos that are destroying the satoyama and using them as food for giant pandas, and to promote upcycling of bamboo trunks, uneaten bamboos, and feces, which were previously disposed of, as effective resources.
